A terrible mountain accident occurred in the Montafon Silvretta group on Saturday. A 54-year-old ski tourer collapsed in front of his companion – who could only save himself by jumping out of the way – together with a large snow cornice on the 3,223 meter high snowdrop and fell 600 meters to his death.
According to police, the man and a companion left Saturday morning for a tour of the Schneeglocke. When we arrived at the summit, after a short break we headed back to the ski and luggage depot, which they had set up below the summit, around 12:50.
However, along the way, around noon, a crack suddenly appeared in the snow cover. The man fell with a large snow cornice. His companion was able to escape from the danger zone by jumping.
However, the 54-year-old fell more than 400 meters through rocky terrain with the snow mass and was buried under the avalanche at the foot of the wall, another 200 meters lower. The emergency doctor could only determine that he was dead.
