The Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia, has again been rocked by a violent explosion. Images and videos on social media show a large fireball in the sky – the explosion is said to have occurred in the port city of Yevpatoria in the southwestern part of the peninsula.
Moscow also reported attacks on Crimea. The air defense destroyed eleven enemy drones, RIA news agency quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying. In addition, five Ukrainian naval drones were intercepted attacking a Russian warship in the Black Sea.
Ukraine also wants to retake Crimea
The day before, Ukrainian forces attacked the port of Sevastopol in Crimea, where Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is based. According to Ukrainian information, a Russian landing ship and a submarine were hit. Crimea is important for supplying Russian invasion forces. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly stated that the goal is to return not only Russian-occupied territories on the mainland, but also Crimea under Ukrainian control.
According to the Russian armed forces, air defense units also shot down Ukrainian drones in the southern Russian regions of Bryansk and Belgorod. Five drones were destroyed over Bryansk and one over Belgorod, Russian news agencies reported, citing local officials and the Defense Ministry. Both areas border Ukraine.
