In response to the fighting with Hezbollah, Israel’s Defense Minister has now announced an imminent military operation on the border with Lebanon. The troops would be moved from the Gaza Strip to the north of the country, Yoav Gallant said on Monday.
Nearly a week ago, he said Israel was closely monitoring the situation on the border with Lebanon, where Hezbollah continued to provoke. “We don’t want war, but we are ready to face any situation that may arise in the north,” Gallant said.
The Israeli army and the Lebanon-based Shiite militia Hezbollah currently fight daily on their shared border. Hamas, with which the Shiite militia is allies, is also active in Lebanon, firing rockets into northern Israel from there.
Missiles from Iran
Hezbollah on Monday claimed responsibility for 10 attacks on Israeli army positions near the border using Iranian-made missiles. In mid-January, Israeli army chief Herzi Halevi warned of a growing threat of war in the north, on the border with Lebanon. ‘I don’t know when the war will take place in the north. The chance that this will happen in the coming months is much greater than in the past.’ According to the Minister of Defense, reservists are already being released from the army ‘to prepare and be ready for future deployment.’
Clashes have increased dramatically since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7. Since then, more than 200 people are believed to have been killed in southern Lebanon, most of them Hezbollah members. Conversely, Israeli authorities reported the deaths of nine soldiers and six civilians in attacks from Lebanon.
