Date:

Two young people have been arrested in Russia for suspected sabotage on behalf of Ukraine. The two 17-year-old suspects were arrested in the town of Dolgoprudny near Moscow, police said on Tuesday, according to state news agency TASS. Additionally, according to activists, a woman was charged with extremism after authorities discovered photos of a rainbow flag on her Instagram profile.

The two youths were taken into custody on sabotage charges. The maximum penalty for this crime is up to 20 years in prison, depending on the severity. According to investigators, the teenagers had carried out an attack on the Russian railway network. One of the two had previously been contacted online by a Ukrainian supporter. He convinced the teenager to carry out the attack for $150. With the help of his friend, the suspect then set fire to a crate of railway equipment at a train station in a Moscow suburb.

Kiev calls for attacks on the railway network
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian authorities have repeatedly reported attacks on railway lines. Military locations were also targeted. Kiev largely denies responsibility for this, but supports attacks on Russia’s rail network. From the Ukrainian perspective, Moscow is using the railways to transport troops and fuel as part of its offensive.

Woman charged over rainbow flag
A woman in Russia has been accused of extremism after her Instagram profile featured photos of a rainbow flag, according to activists. Inna Mosina, 33, from the city of Saratov is “accused of displaying a symbol of an extremist organization,” human rights group Pjervy Otdel said on Tuesday. The charge is punishable by up to 15 days in prison or a fine of up to 2,000 rubles (20 euros).

From the defendants’ perspective, the proceedings are unfounded, the human rights group said. The photo was posted before the LGBT ban came into effect. Moreover, the procedure violates the Russian Constitution, which enshrines freedom of expression.
