Julian Jäger, board member of Vienna Airport, looks back with satisfaction on the past year in the krone.tv interview: “In 2023, with a total of 29.5 million passengers, we will have the second best result in the airport’s history achieved. This is near the highest level of 2019 before the pandemic.”
But there are also negative developments: “German air traffic is weakening and things are not going as well in Switzerland as here. The German-speaking region is under pressure in the aviation sector. Compared to 2019, we see a decrease of almost 30 percent.”
More private trips again
Overall, many more people are flying privately on holiday than before the pandemic, but demand for business travel is declining.
On the long-haul route from Vienna, Bangkok currently ranks first, followed by New York and Taipei in second and third.
“Prepared for all possibilities”
VIE board member Jäger seems surprisingly relaxed about possible climate sticking campaigns at the airport: “We have good cooperation with the police and are prepared for all possibilities. In any case, we are not afraid of climate adhesives.”
There have been smaller last generation actions in the past, but no one has ever stuck to the airport or runways. Jäger: “That would also be a criminal offense in the airport area. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone.”
Many other topics, such as the dominance of AUA and Ryanair in Vienna or which destinations are particularly emerging, can be seen in the video above.
