Aid agency SOS Mediterranee complains that its rescue vessel “Ocean Viking” with 296 people on board has been waiting for 10 days for a chance to enter a port in the Mediterranean Sea. The ship is located a few nautical miles off the coast of the Italian island of Sicily. Among those rescued on board is a three-month-old baby.
“Some of the 296 survivors aboard the ‘Ocean Viking’ have spent their tenth night on board. Children, women and men are still not allowed to disembark. This situation is worrying. These people need a safe haven now,” tweeted SOS Mediterranee.
A few days ago, an injured man had been evacuated from the ship. The rescue ship is now waiting to be left in an Italian port. A corresponding application was submitted to the authorities.
Again and again people sail from the coasts of North Africa across the Mediterranean to the EU. Italy is a favorite destination, where more than 16,000 migrants arrived in boats this year, according to data from the interior ministry in Rome. Last year there were 2,500 fewer around the same time.
