Resistant bacteria remained in the body for years

Date:

Swiss researchers have recently gained important insights into the fight against resistant bacteria. In some patients, a study discovered bacteria that were resistant to antibiotics years after the initial infection.

“These patients can become ill again and again or be a source of infection for other people. “They therefore represent a reservoir for these pathogens,” Aguilar Bultet, lead author of the study, said in a statement from the University of Basel on Thursday.

Focus of the study on elderly people with previous diseases
The researchers led by Sarah Tschudin analyzed samples from more than 70 people for the study, which was published in the journal “Nature Communications.” These were infected with resistant bacteria of the species Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. The focus of the study was on elderly people with previous illnesses.

Even after five or even nine years, the resistant bacteria were still detectable in some patients, the study found. These findings are of great importance for the design of therapies.
