Even more provocation: North Korea fires cruise missiles again

Date:

North Korea’s self-proclaimed nuclear power has fired several guided missiles for the fourth time since the beginning of this year, according to the South Korean military. The General Staff in Seoul said the cruise missile launch was registered on Friday morning (local time). They therefore flew towards the sea between the Korean Peninsula and China. No further details were initially known.

North Korea said it had recently tested strategic cruise missiles several times to expand the country’s nuclear power. These included newly developed cruise missiles that could be fired from a submarine. The term ‘strategic’ suggests that they will be equipped with nuclear weapons.

Significantly more weapons tests in the last two years
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are currently rising again. Over the past two years, North Korea has significantly increased the scale of its missile and missile weapons tests and also increased rhetoric against the United States and South Korea, which Pyongyang considers hostile states. Washington and Seoul have expanded their military cooperation, including joint exercises.

Guided missiles can be equipped with nuclear warheads
North Korea is largely isolated internationally because of its nuclear weapons and missile programs. Unlike ballistic missiles, cruise missile tests are not directly affected by the UN ban orders against the country. However, like ballistic missiles, they can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead. Unlike ballistic missiles, guided missiles have their own permanent propulsion.
