With Rafah in its crosshairs, Berlin urges Israel to exercise restraint in its offensive

Date:

The Israeli army apparently wants to expand its fight against the radical Islamic Hamas to the southern side of the Gaza Strip. The army will also reach and dismantle the Hamas brigade in Rafah, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said in a newspaper on Thursday. The United Nations is very concerned. The German government is also urging restraint.

“There are also rules when it comes to the right to self-defense. International military law also applies in the fight against terrorists,” a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry in Berlin said on Friday. Israel must comply, even if Hamas does not comply.

The German government is calling for a humanitarian pause in the fighting
“We have therefore clearly asked Israel several times to adjust its operations, to better protect civilians, to better protect UN facilities and hospitals in particular and to allow significantly more humanitarian aid.” The German federal government continues to call for a “humanitarian pause in the fighting.” “If the fighting in Rafah actually intensifies, the obligation to effectively protect civilians will be even stronger,” the spokesperson emphasized.

It is estimated that there are approximately 1.1 to 1.3 million people living in Rafah, living in cramped conditions and extremely precarious conditions. First, people had to flee the fighting in the north. Now they are also threatened with danger at the border with Egypt. In this context, the German Foreign Ministry emphasized: “People cannot now simply disappear into thin air.”

The number of deaths is increasing every day
According to Palestinian figures, the number of deaths in the Gaza Strip has risen to 27,131 since the start of the war. The majority of them were women, children or teenagers, the Hamas-controlled health authority said on Friday. Accordingly, another 66,287 people were injured. In the past 24 hours alone, 112 Palestinians were killed and 148 injured.

The figures cannot be independently verified. However, the UN and other observers point out that the authority’s information has generally proven credible in the past.

The Gaza War was sparked by the worst massacre in Israel’s history, carried out by terrorists from the Islamist Hamas and other extremist groups on October 7 in Israel, near the border with the Gaza Strip. As a result, more than 1,200 people were killed on the Israeli side, including at least 850 civilians.
