The Volkswagen Group faces a new investigation in Brazil. The VW subsidiary there has been accused in hundreds of cases of exploitation of slave labour, human trafficking and systematic human rights violations. The allegations relate to the period from 1974 to 1986.
According to a report by NDR, SWR and the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the car manufacturer built the Companhia Vale do Rio Cristalino farm on the edge of the Amazon basin at the time.
The alleged crimes were allegedly committed on the farm on temporary workers employed for clean-up work – according to the information “probably with the knowledge of VW management in Wolfsburg”.

The Brazilian investigative authorities officially notified Volkswagen Brazil of the procedure on May 19, 2022. The company was summoned to a hearing before the labor court in the capital Brasília on June 14.
According to the report, the company declined to comment on possible legal proceedings in Brazil upon request. However, it has assured that it takes the allegations very seriously.
