The explosion of a gas cartridge in an apartment in Tösens (Landeck district) in Tyrol caused extensive damage. A local man (50) was cooking in his kitchen with a gas cartridge to save electricity. Miraculously, the man was unharmed.
This penny pinching almost went dramatically wrong. A local man (50) was preparing a meal in the kitchen of his apartment around 1.40pm on Saturday. Naturally, he did not use the electric stove for this, but rather a camping stove. According to reports, locals wanted to save electricity.
When replacing a gas cartridge, the flame spread to another cartridge, causing an uncontrolled fire. The 50-year-old dropped the lit cartridge, which then exploded on the ground.
Burning cartridge thrown out the window
The resulting pressure wave tore two windows and the patio door from their anchorage. With the presence of mind, the man then threw the lit cartridge outside. A neighbor heard the crash and extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher.
Instead of calling 911, the fire chief was contacted
Instead of calling 911, the victim’s sister came to Tösen fire chief Michael Pult. “She said there had been a small gas explosion and that we should take a look,” Pult said. “I drove to the scene of the accident with my deputy and two other comrades, but there was almost nothing left to do,” he said.
The Florianis took care of the 50-year-old, called the rescue team and started cleaning up. The man was taken to Zams Hospital, but was able to leave in the evening. He was virtually unharmed and the material damage was considerable.
