On Friday around 5:30 p.m., the Pitten and Neunkirchen Stadt fire brigades (Lower Austria) were warned of a vehicle fire on the A2 in the section between Gleissenfeld and the Seebenstein junction.
Several emergency calls had previously been received, each with different location information and directions. The burning car was eventually found shortly before Seebenstein on the A2 towards Vienna.
The occupants were able to escape from the car
When the first troops arrived, the car was already completely on fire. Due to the enormous heat development, the nearby dike also started to burn. Fortunately, both occupants were able to escape from the vehicle in time and were unharmed.
The Pitten fire brigade carried out a firefighting operation using heavy breathing equipment and extinguishing foam to quickly extinguish the flames. The burning car battery posed an additional challenge: the highway police completely closed parts of the A2 to extinguish the fire.
The operation took almost two hours
The burnt-out car was loaded with a crane after the fire-fighting work was completed. The driver and his passenger were uninjured. There was a gap of four kilometers.
After just over an hour, the wreckage was removed from the accident scene and the highway was reopened to traffic.
