A clear majority of citizens in Germany believe that democracy in the Federal Republic is in danger. For more than three weeks, tens of thousands of people have been taking to the streets across Germany against the right and the AfD.
In a survey* by the polling institute INSA for “Bild am Sonntag”, 61 percent stated that they saw democracy in danger. A third of those surveyed disagree.
The reason was an investigation by media company Correctiv into a meeting between the radical right and individual politicians from the AfD, CDU and Values Union in Potsdam in November.
The anti-right-wing demonstrations continued this weekend with tens of thousands of participants.
Police: 120,000 at demonstration against the right
More than 100,000 people gathered in Berlin on Saturday. A human chain was planned under the motto “We are the firewall”. Behind the campaign against hate and for tolerance is an alliance called “Hand in Hand” with more than 1,300 organizations.
More than half of the survey participants (55 percent) welcome these demonstrations, while 26 percent reject them – twelve percent don’t care.
*For the study, the institute interviewed 1,002 adult German citizens on February 1 and 2.
