An impressive number of anti-fascists marched from the AEC Linz over the Nibelungen Bridge towards the Kaufmännisches Vereinshaus late on Saturday afternoon. 1,600 demonstrators protested loudly and with banners against the boys’ club ball taking place there, for which LH Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) had taken over the honorary protection.
At 5:30 p.m., the anti-fascists gathered in front of the Ars Electronica Center (AEC). Then the procession of people started moving. According to the police, about 1,600 people took part (according to the organizers that number was 2,500). After a walk around the New Town Hall we headed over the Nibelungen Bridge to the main square of Linz and continued via Taubenmarkt and Landstrasse.
The alliance “Linz Against the Right” has been organizing this demonstration for ten years. “The Burschenbundball is not just a dance event, but a networking event where right-wing extremists and German nationalists exchange ideas with top representatives from business and politics. In Germany and Austria, people take to the streets in support of democracy. “We are also showing in Upper Austria that we will not tolerate enemies of democracy,” alliance spokeswoman Eva Reiter said beforehand.
She criticizes the fact that Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) has again taken over the protection of the honor for the ball this year – to which, among others, the German National Brotherhood invited Arminia Czernowitz: ‘Even if the governor did not participate in the ball this year, he had no problem supporting him with his honorary protection and sees no need to distance himself.”
A large contingent of police accompanied the demonstrators. According to the director, everything was apparently peaceful until the end of the meeting and there were no major incidents.
