A new painting of Jesus Christ is currently stirring Catholic minds in Spain. Too beautiful, too sexy, too profane and too kitschy: these are just a few criticisms of the work of the Sevillian artist Salustiano García Cruz. There is a heated discussion going on on social networks!
“Art is a daughter of freedom, and takes its prescription from the need of the spirit, not from the need of matter,” wrote the poet Friedrich Schiller in 1793.
But when it comes to religion, it is important to be sensitive, respectful and pious when dealing with artificial design, so as not to give the impression of blasphemy.
But this is exactly what happened in Seville, Spain – at least according to many Catholic believers. They ‘rub’ against a poster that is supposed to advertise the Easter celebrations in the traditional city. What you can see: A Jesus who looks way too sexy and dashing.
The photo depicts Jesus with delicate, often even too feminine, facial features. His long, shiny hair falls over his shoulders. He is not wearing a crown of thorns, only two small wounds can be seen on one hand and in the chest area. The abdomen is covered with a cloth.
“That could be a pop star!”
There is no sign of the suffering of Jesus Christ, who was executed on the cross. “That could also be a pop star,” one woman complains on Twitter. Many people see it the same way, some even suspect blasphemy.

The artist’s son was the model
Artist Salustiano García Cruz takes the criticism calmly. His son was a model and he wanted to show a risen Jesus, the bright side of Holy Week: “If someone sees something dirty in my photo, it is the result of his own dirt, which he projects onto the photo.”
The mayor of Seville defended the artist and his work. “I like it, it’s brave and it takes risks,” the ABC newspaper quoted him as saying. All excitement is a bit “artificial”.
