fire in Donaustadt – Viennese woman sets blanket on fire and flees – man in coma

Date:

After the room fire in an apartment building in Vienna-Donaustadt, a 53-year-old woman is now suspected of starting the fire. She is the partner of the seriously injured man (57). Six other residents also had to be taken to hospital after the fire.

Three children were among those hospitalized. The fire started on Saturday evening.

The woman allegedly set the blanket on fire
Initially, the cause of the fire in the ground floor apartment at 9 p.m. could not be explained. However, on Sunday afternoon it turned out that the fire had apparently been lit, the national police headquarters announced. The suspect is the partner of the seriously injured man, a 53-year-old woman. She allegedly set fire to a blanket and left the apartment after failing to extinguish the fire.

The arsonist is probably mentally ill
Police spokesman Markus Dittrich said there are indications of a possible mental illness in the woman. She may also have been drunk at the time of the crime. In a brief initial interview, the 53-year-old admitted to setting the blanket on fire. She could not name a motive. “She said she didn’t know why she did it,” Dittrich said. Dittrich said that after consultation with the journalist from the Vienna Public Prosecution Service, the 53-year-old was transferred to a psychiatric ward and reported for negligently causing a fire.

Man is in an artificial deep sleep
Her partner, who, according to fire brigade spokesman Christian Feiler, was rescued from the ground floor apartment “at the last minute” by the Vienna fire brigade, is now in a hospital in an artificial deep sleep. He had suffered burns and a smoke inhalation wound.

The professional fire brigade had to extinguish the flames on Saturday with a total of eight vehicles and 39 emergency services.
