The recognition rate of asylum applications increased last year. In 2023, almost exactly 26,500 people received a protection title (asylum, subsidiary protection, etc.). This is evident from the official annual statistics from the Ministry of the Interior that are now available.
The total number of asylum applications – as recently reported by the ministry – was 58,698. This corresponds to a decrease of 48 percent compared to 2022. Moreover, not all refugees registered in Austria actually wanted to stay here. This is reflected in the fact that the procedure has been completed for approximately 31,000 people. As a rule, these are refugees who had another destination country and traveled further there.
There are significantly more men than women among asylum seekers
When it comes to gender, significantly more men came to Austria: almost 32,000 compared to almost 7,000 women, equivalent to 76 percent. About 19,800 asylum seekers were minors, of whom about 5,100 were unaccompanied. Refugees from Afghanistan in particular fall into this group. In total, more than half of the applicants fall into the age group of 18 to 35 years.
The main country of origin is Syria, followed by Afghanistan and Turkey. Refugees from Syria have the best chances of asylum with an acceptance rate of 61 percent.
78,800 people in primary care
At the beginning of this year, there were 78,800 people in primary care. That is considerably less than at the same time last year, when there were almost 93,000. By far the largest group in basic care consists of 40,000 displaced people from Ukraine.
