44 killed in torrential rain in Brazil’s Recife region

Nearly torrential rains have already killed at least 44 people in the region of the Brazilian city of Recife since last Tuesday. Thirty of those deaths were recorded during the day on Saturday alone, and forecasts point to more rain in the coming days.

56 people are also missing and another 25 were injured. There are also 3,957 people without shelter and 533 have had to be evicted from their homes because of the poor condition they were in. This is stated in the latest balance made by the Minister of Regional Development, Daniel Ferreira, who appeared to the press from Recife Air Force Base.

Ferreira called on the state government to declare a state of emergency in Recife and Pernambuco in the face of flooding, requiring the publication of the measure in the Official Gazette of the Union, the Brazilian equivalent of the Official Gazette. Additional resources can then be released to deal with the emergency.

Of the 30 deaths recorded on Saturday, 20 correspond to a landslide in Jardim Monte Verde, in the Ibura neighborhood of southern Recife region, according to the latest report from Brazil’s Civil Defense. This Sunday a delegation of the federal government flew over the affected area. Ferreira and the Ministers of Tourism, Carlos Brito; Health, Marcelo Queiroga and Citizenship, Ronaldo Bento.

Authorities urged the evacuation of 32,000 families living in high-risk areas and also accommodated municipal facilities, while others had to stay in the homes of friends or relatives.

Only from 11 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday, according to civil defense officials, has 236 millimeters of rain per square meter fallen in some parts of the city. This amount, which has fallen in just eight hours, represents more than 70% of the total rainfall expected over the city for May.

To help those affected, the governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Cámara, announced the appointment of 92 new members of the fire service. They would take their position from June 6, with the aim of strengthening the rescue of the victims of the floods, according to the newspaper ‘O Globo’. In addition, he requested the support of personnel of the armed forces, as well as ships and aircraft of the Brazilian army.
