February 6 marked exactly one year since a devastating earthquake struck Turkey and Syria. Many people are still staying in emergency accommodation, such as containers or tents. In many places, destroyed water and sewer pipes have not yet been repaired.
The earthquake killed more than 55,000 people. And a year later, unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of people are still suffering from the consequences of the natural disaster.
Austria’s willingness to donate was enormous
“In total, approximately 14 million people have been reached with donations from all over the world. But the magnitude of the earthquake is so enormous that this willingness to help is unfortunately simply not enough. “So we remain dependent on donations,” said Teresa Mayr, coordinator of International Disasters and Crises at the World Council of Churches.
The consequences of the earthquakes are also clearly palpable on a psychosocial level. Many women, men and children are traumatized and need help. The road back to a normal life will take a very long time for those affected.
“The Turkish Red Crescent and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent provide psychosocial support. They offer child-friendly spaces especially for children, where activities for children are carried out, from drawing to playing, everything is possible.
