After the death of three soldiers in a drone strike on a US base in Jordan, near the Syrian border, US President Joe Biden announced a tough response. Days later, the air force actually carried out retaliatory strikes on 85 targets in Iraq and Syria. Fighters, weapons and infrastructure of Iranian-backed Shiite militias are said to have been destroyed. For Russia, these attacks were just an attempt to improve Biden’s image.
“We see in these attempts to flex our muscles above all a desire to influence the domestic political landscape in America,” Russia’s UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said Monday at a Security Council meeting requested by Moscow on the attacks. “We see a desire to somehow correct the disastrous image of the current US administration on the international stage, while the presidential election campaign is in full swing,” Nebensja continued.
The American ambassador invokes the right to self-defense
There is no justification for the American action. US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood justified US attacks in Syria and Iraq on the basis of Article 51 of the United Nations’ founding charter. This regulates the individual or collective right of states to self-defense against armed attacks. The Armed Forces Regional Command in the Middle East stressed that further military strikes would follow to combat the “threat to the stability of Iraq, the region and the security of American citizens.”
Ex-secret service agent: “Empty buildings attacked”
But former intelligence officer Michael Pregent doesn’t believe all these words. Speaking to bild.de on Monday, the Middle East expert criticized the fact that “no high-ranking commander of the militia network” with connections to Tehran was targeted. Rather, “empty buildings were shot with precision munitions,” as he explained on X (formerly Twitter).
Pregent was referring to the fact that it had taken so long for the retaliatory attacks to start. High-ranking militia members were taken to safety until the actual attack. “When the Islamic State or Al-Qaeda carry out deadly attacks, the United States responds by eliminating their leaders. “But the current US administration does not dare to eliminate Tehran’s terrorist commanders,” Pregent said.
