The EU’s new billion-dollar aid to Ukraine has overcome a new hurdle. After Hungary abandoned its blockade of financial aid last week, negotiators from the European Parliament and EU countries also agreed on the 50 billion euro package on Tuesday evening.
At the end of 2027, the amount will be used, among other things, for reconstruction after the Russian war of aggression and for reforms.
EU countries said 33 billion of that will be loans and the rest grants. In fact, the aid program should have been decided at a regular EU summit in December. However, at the time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán vetoed the deal and prevented an agreement.
The rest is a formality
He had previously questioned the usefulness of the plans several times and in this context also pointed out that, in his view, the EU had wrongly frozen funds from the Community budget intended for his country. During a special summit last week, he gave up his blockade.
Overview of previous donations:
The European Parliament and EU countries still have to approve the project. But that is considered a formality.
