As part of a drug investigation, Styrian police have seized the mobile phone of a Romanian. This turned out to be a real goldmine: more than 1,000 videos documenting not only the sale of narcotics to minors, but also excessive drug parties and crimes in southeastern Styria.
The mobile phone of a 21-year-old Romanian living in the South-East Styrian district has turned out to be a real ‘gift’ for the police: in September last year, officers from the Halbenrain police station seized the mobile phone as part of an investigation into medicines. The man, who was already known to authorities, was suspected of selling large quantities of cocaine, ketamine, ecstasy and marijuana, mainly to minors.
Drug parties lasting several days
The analysis of over a thousand cell phone videos revealed something incredible: hundreds of videos documenting excessive drug parties, some of which lasted several days and even ended up in the hospital for one person involved. The sale of narcotics was also registered. In this context alone, 25 suspects were investigated.
Physical injuries were also filmed
But that wasn’t all: the videos also showed numerous other crimes – from bodily harm to coercion. A video shows how suspects deflate the tires of a police car.
Driving under the influence of drugs
There are also around 70 recordings in which the 21-year-old filmed himself driving abandoned cars, apparently under the influence of drugs – even though he does not have a driver’s license. Other video footage shows suspects driving through local areas at speeds of 120km/h.
To date, investigations based on the video assessments have led to approximately 30 suspects and more than 200 reports have been filed.
