Before the parliamentary elections: deaths in attacks on politicians’ offices in Pakistan

Date:

At least 26 people were killed in attacks in Pakistan on Wednesday. The explosions occurred near the offices of constituency candidates a day before the general election. Both candidates were not present at the time of the crime.

According to police and the information minister of Balochistan province, the first blast occurred about 100 kilometers from the border with Afghanistan, in Pishin district. At least fourteen people were killed and more than thirty others were injured. The second attack took place in the city of Sayfullah. According to police, twelve people were killed and nine were injured.

A spokesperson for the authorities assumed that the attacks were targeted. The first explosion was caused by a bomb installed on a motorcycle.

The Pakistani people will elect a new parliament on Thursday. Militant Islamist groups have been carrying out more attacks for some time now. It is unlikely that the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) is behind this. In any case, they recently announced in a statement that despite their rejection they would not attack the elections.

No unlimited access to information
Meanwhile, human rights organizations such as Amnesty International warned of internet restrictions during the parliamentary elections. Unlimited access to information is a human right, the report said. The authorities must ensure this for free, fair and inclusive elections.

In total, more than 240 million residents can vote. The Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday that internet service could slow down in some regions. The security of the vote must be guaranteed, it was said. The government has restricted access in the past, partly to crack down on opposition in the country.
