A rather unusual theft took place in Vienna-Margareten on Tuesday afternoon. A suspect brandished a toy gun after he was caught stealing a can of beer.
A 26-year-old Austrian felt unnoticed in a supermarket on Margaretener Kliebergasse on Tuesday afternoon. He shouldn’t have to go as unnoticed as he felt. A store detective who was also present in the supermarket observed via camera how the young man wearing a jacket looked in all directions and put a can of Schwechater beer in his jacket pocket. The thief then walked past the store’s cash register and pretended he had decided not to buy anything.
Caught beer thief
But the thief had not paid the bill with the attentive store detective. He immediately ran to the cash registers and confronted the beer can thieves. Instead of having an insightful conversation, the 26-year-old pulled out a firearm he was carrying in his other jacket pocket. He threatened the detective. However, his threats came to nothing: the employee soon realized that it was just a toy gun. Even the red plastic stopper common to toy guns was still attached to the front of the gun. He held the beer lover until police arrived.
Several thefts already
The Austrian is no stranger to the executive branch. On November 30 and December 1, 2023, he stole – probably also beer – from other Viennese supermarkets. Also on January 6 and 18. On January 21, he relieved a supermarket in Salzburg. According to police spokesman Markus Dittrich, the infamous thief is said to be at large. The beer was taken from him.
