Even four months after the major attack on Israel by the terrorist organization Hamas, there is still no trace of the group’s leader, Jihia Al Sinwar. Now the Israeli military has apparently managed to find evidence of a direct connection between Iran and the 61-year-old. The Hamas leader, who allegedly directed the massacre, is said to have received millions of dollars from the Islamic Republic.
The Israeli military reported discovering documents in the extensive tunnel system under the Gaza Strip that provide evidence of financial flows between Iran and Hamas. “This is yet another example of how Iran is exporting terror to the Middle East,” military spokesman Daniel Hagari said.
“Exported terror is a global problem”
The soldiers discovered documents showing that more than 150 million dollars (about 140 million euros) had been transferred from Iran to Hamas and Sinwar. Documents and photos of envelopes and cash were published but could not yet be independently verified. “The terror that Iran exports and causes is a global problem,” Hagari said. The information would also be passed on to Israeli partners for verification, the spokesperson said.
Millions of dollars in cash discovered in safe
A safe was also discovered in an underground room with banknotes and bags containing more than 20 million shekels (approximately five million euros). “It is a recurring phenomenon: large sums of cash are kept in organized underground warehouses for the personal use of high-ranking Hamas officials,” Hagari said. Hamas leaders would use the money for their personal survival and that of their underground families.
Israel has been Iran’s proclaimed arch-enemy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Hamas is part of the so-called Axis of Resistance, alongside other militias such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.
