Hunting for Wagner – Ukrainian special forces operate in Sudan

Date:

Members of the mercenary group Wagner have been deployed in Sudan for years. They were initially hired by former ruler Umar al-Bashir to protect him in the fight against the opposition. He was eventually overthrown in 2019, but Russian mercenaries remained in the country. Now they are also likely involved in the recent fighting between the army and rebel militias, fighting alongside the RSF militia against the government. Now Wagner has a new enemy: the Ukrainian special forces.

They’re apparently hunting Wagner mercenaries in Civil War country. There have been reports of attacks on military bases for months. Ukrainian forces are suspected of being behind this. Now a Ukrainian newspaper has published a video of suspected Wagner fighters being tied up being interrogated – by Ukrainian soldiers.

One of the tied men speaks Russian and claims during interrogation that he entered Sudan via the Central African Republic. His mission is to overthrow the local government. He is said to be one of about 100 men (see video above).

In the video from the “Kyiv Post” you also see two Africans who have also been arrested. The newspaper assumes that the two were recruited locally. When asked how much their salary was, the two replied: $1,000.

Intelligence chief: “Kill Russian war criminals everywhere”
According to the media, Ukraine’s special forces have been active in Sudan for several months. In May last year, the head of HUR’s military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, announced: “We will kill Russian war criminals. It doesn’t matter where they are.’ The operations of the past few months in Sudan would therefore fit into the picture.
