A heavily drunk driver stopped at a level crossing in Neudorf ob Wildon (Leibnitz district) in Styria on Monday afternoon. A train with 25 passengers on board hit the car despite emergency braking. The 52-year-old driver had to be flown to the LKH Graz by rescue helicopter.

At around 5 p.m. on Monday, a 52-year-old man from South Styria was driving on a municipal road in the direction of Neudorf ob Wildon. He then stopped at an unrestricted level crossing controlled by traffic lights, according to police.
Despite an emergency stop
When the driver of an approaching train set noticed that the car was in the middle of the level crossing, he initiated an emergency stop. Nevertheless, the car was hit by the locomotive on the right side and thrown off the track.
Driver and passengers unharmed
The occupant was freed from the wreckage by firefighters and flown to Graz regional hospital with unknown injuries. A blood test showed he was heavily intoxicated, police said. The driver and 25 passengers were not injured.
