Once again, high winds were partly responsible for the death of a forestry worker. During felling work in a forest in Innerschwand (Upper Austria), a spruce fell the wrong way and slipped. A 46-year-old Romanian was swept away. The man was so seriously injured that he died shortly afterwards in hospital.
Four highly experienced Romanian forest workers have been carrying out tree felling work in a forest in the Innerschwand-Hölblingkogel area since January 16. Around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, two of them were working near a forest road, about 25 meters below their 46-year-old colleague, who operated the equipment cable car.
The 46-year-old was felling a spruce tree with a chainsaw. He cut a cut about 6 inches deep into the tree to drop it into the valley.
But apparently the high winds (40 to 50 km/h) caused the top of the tree to fall uphill, causing the interface to slide towards the valley. The 46-year-old was dragged by the branches and left seriously injured on the forest floor.
His colleagues immediately came to his aid and started the rescue chain. The Mondsee Red Cross provided first aid in the 35 degree steep terrain. After treatment by the emergency physician, the seriously injured man was safely transported to the forest road and taken to the Salzburg State Hospital under continuous resuscitation with the Christophorus 6 emergency physician helicopter around 12.15 p.m.
However, at 1.30 pm the doctors had to abandon their resuscitation attempts without success. Unfortunately, the 46-year-old could no longer be helped.
According to the police, no evidence of foul play was found in the forestry accident.
