+43% in North America – Mattel’s doll business is booming thanks to the ‘Barbie’ movie

Date:

For many, the film ‘Barbie’ with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling was the cinema highlight of the past year – this success also had an impact on the dolls from manufacturer Mattel. The comic gave toys a strong boost in the Christmas business. Gross sales of Barbie dolls increased by 27 percent to 473 million dollars (440.29 million euros).

The film, released in the summer, has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and also boosted previously weak interest in Barbie products. In its home market of North America, there was even an increase of 43 percent, the company announced on Wednesday after the American stock market closed.

Mattel records the total of customer invoices issued in the gross operating figure, excluding any discount promotions. The group’s sales across all product categories increased 16 percent year-on-year to $1.6 billion. Profit rose to $147.3 million from $16.1 million in the same quarter last year.
