Terrible drama surrounding a three-month-old baby in Vienna: a few days ago the parents took the boy to the Ottakring clinic. Diagnosis: severe shaken baby syndrome and fractures. Despite being taken to the general hospital, the baby did not survive.
It is a story that will not only hurt the hearts of parents of small children. On February 3, a 29-year-old and a 26-year-old brought their child to the Ottakring clinic. The three-month-old boy was probably already unconscious. In any case, the doctors diagnosed severe shaking trauma; several bones in the little boy’s body may also have been broken.
Massive brain damage
The baby was transferred to the AKH, where the doctors selflessly fought for the life of the boy, who was only born in November 2023. Ultimately in vain: the damage to the brain was too great. A few days ago, life support measures were stopped for the small child, who was registered in Liesing together with his mother, a Serbian resident with Austrian nationality.
The perpetrator is still unclear
It is still unclear at this time who probably shook the child so hard that it eventually died. Since the baby was taken to the Ottakring clinic, it is possible that the incident took place in the father’s apartment (he also has Serbian roots) in Fünfhaus.
The suspicion of torturing or neglecting minors, young people or defenseless people is aimed at both the mother and the 29-year-old father of the child. Both are in shock and have not yet been able to be interviewed. They were free on Thursday. The presumption of innocence applies to all involved.
It is unlikely that the couple has yet appeared to the police. The Vienna Department of Child and Youth Welfare (Magistrate Department MA 11) was informed. The Liesinger family was no stranger to child and youth care, but not because of violence or abuse towards children.
Family asked for financial support
So the couple has a two-year-old child who does not live together but is allowed to be together. In March 2023, the parents turned to a family center for child and youth welfare for support with financial matters. The contact lasted until early May.
The two-year-old child was now presented to a focus group at the AKH, which showed that the toddler was doing well given the circumstances. It was initially placed with crisis foster parents, where it was well received – including by their own offspring – and immediately encouraged to play.
Child and youth care is gradually looking at the family environment, for example whether close relatives such as uncles and aunts can care for the child, the spokeswoman said. The toddler also spent a night with an aunt. The parents did not appear at MA 11 for a discussion about what to do with the toddler – apparently on the advice of their legal representation.
In this context, the MA-11 spokeswoman appealed to parents to contact child and youth services immediately for support if they feel or show signs of being overwhelmed or simply overtired. The service telephone is available at 01-4000-8011, Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
