Key stolen – slept in hotel rooms without paying

Date:

An unemployed 21-year-old allegedly broke open a hotel mailbox containing key cards several times. Reason: He was looking for a place to rest and was caught sleeping in bed by employees.

A 21-year-old Turk sat contrite before the judge in Linz. The unemployed man is said to have broken into a hotel mailbox at least three times, where guests can throw their key cards in after checking out.

He knew Hotel
He used the stolen cards to gain access to the rooms so he could sleep in. He was already familiar with the hotel because the homeless man had previously stayed there several times for a fee. He was also known to the staff because they had to wake him up repeatedly because he had not checked out on time.

Surprised in bed
His fame was his downfall: when the illegal overnight stays were noticed, the 21-year-old was identified on video surveillance and also found sleeping in a room.

Praise for improvement
“I learned from my mistakes,” he promised, so he wouldn’t have to go to prison again. The 21-year-old had been in custody there since New Year’s Eve because he did not show up for the first hearing.

Judge showed leniency
The sentence for the offenses he is accused of is a maximum of three years. Because of his young age, the judge wanted to give him another chance: eight months in prison, one month of which was unconditional – but he had already served it. He will also be given a probationary period and must pay compensation of 1,200 euros.
