Konstantin from Lower Austria needs a special car seat and a buggy due to his serious illness. However, for mother Melanie Wagner, the expensive purchase is unaffordable: she hopes for financial help.
At birth, the umbilical cord was wrapped twice around his neck, Down syndrome, spinal deformity, cataracts in both eyes: nine-year-old Konstantin from Ebreichsdorf in the Baden district needs the full attention of his mother Melanie Wagner (33) because of his illnesses. There is no such thing as a normal job.
A step she didn’t want to take
The financial situation is therefore precarious. The fact that the boy now needs a new special car seat and a buggy brings Wagner to the brink of despair – and pushes her to take a step she never wanted to take. She needs to ask for donations. “I wanted to do everything myself. But it’s not about me, it’s about the little one who didn’t choose any of this,” says the 33-year-old.
The two purchases, which would at least make the child’s life a little easier, cost more than 11,000 euros. “Konstantin cannot sit in a normal booster seat in the car,” the mother explains. In addition to the wheelchair, the buggy would also make longer journeys easier.
ÖGK wants to investigate the matter
Discussions about financing through health insurance have so far come to nothing. “It was of course requested, but in their eyes it represents pure luxury,” reports Wagner. However, in response to a “Krone” request, the ÖGK announced that it would re-examine the matter.
