A major fire broke out at a water park in Gothenburg, Sweden on Monday morning. The fire started with explosions outside a water slide, as shown in video footage (see above), and quickly spread through the building.
A short time later, meter-high flames flared up and thick, dark smoke spread over the city. Police have evacuated an adjacent hotel and several offices at the Liseberg theme park in the heart of Gothenburg. Residents were asked to stay in their homes and keep windows and doors closed.
Fire investigators assume it was an industrial accident
The cause of the devastating fire is still unclear, but fire investigators believe it was an “industrial accident.” The water park, which has not yet opened, is part of an expansion that would open this year. The construction costs were estimated by the TT news agency at around 115 million euros.
Construction work was almost complete
The “Oceana” water park would open in the summer. It will become part of Liseberg, Scandinavia’s largest theme park. A spokeswoman for the responsible construction company NCC said construction work on the water park was almost complete. The final inspection was therefore scheduled for April. The pools were only recently filled with water.
Sixteen people were injured in the major fire and one person is still missing, according to authorities.
