For a protest in which the Last Generation besieged the Reichsbrücke last year, eleven climate activists in Vienna received the highest administrative sentences to date. The sentences were recently confirmed by the administrative court – much to the delight of Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP).
In this case, he was “very, very grateful that the courts made this decision,” Karner said on the sidelines of a press conference in Vienna on Tuesday. Members of the Last Generation filed a complaint after a protest on May 15, 2023, but the court rejected it.
Karner: “Decision was taken with due seriousness”
The police are acting “with all vehemence against climate glue” and if higher penalties are now imposed, “that should be fine for me as Minister of the Interior,” the minister explained when asked by a journalist. The fact that the court “decided with due severity” was positive, said Karner, who emphasized that he normally does not comment on court rulings.
The 1,200 euros to be paid each represent a “record fine” for the movement. “These are the highest administrative penalties we have received in Vienna to date,” spokeswoman Marina Hagen-Canaval told the APA.
