Animal protection organization PETA is currently making people sit up with their suggestion to no longer allow (fake) animals to ride on carousels. Over its long history it has given rise to many other rather strange ideas – and there is a system behind it!
In 1980, activist Ingrid Newkirk laid the foundation for PETA – an abbreviation of ‘People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ in the US. Today there are offices in many cities around the world, and the German branch of PETA Deutschland eV was founded in 1993. According to its own information, it is “the largest and most effective animal protection organization” with millions of supporters around the world.
The mission is clear: to educate about animal abuse and create compassion. The organization has always worked quite radically and very media-effectively. PETA’s demands are often seen by the general public as extreme, but sometimes as completely bizarre. In both cases this means one thing above all: people are talking about it! Such as the current open letter from founder Newkirk to manufacturers of children’s carousels for amusement parks.
