A 27-year-old woman from Somalia set fire to her room at the asylum center in Kindberg (Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district) on Tuesday. 160 people had to be evacuated and five people were injured.
Around noon, a fire broke out on the ground floor of the facility in the single room of a woman (27) staying there. Several employees immediately came to help. They immediately brought the Somali woman, other residents and all employees to safety. In total, more than 160 people were brought out in a short time. Alarmed emergency services from the Kindtal fire brigade quickly extinguished the fire. Several Red Cross vehicles were also deployed to provide initial medical care together with an emergency physician. Four employees of the facility suffered smoke poisoning and were taken by the Red Cross to various locations at the LKH Hochsteiermark.
Initial investigation into the cause of the fire
As revealed during the initial investigation, the 27-year-old may have started the fire in the room herself due to her psychological emergency. She apparently suffered no injuries, but was taken to a hospital in Graz for further medical treatment. The extent of the material damage caused has not yet been determined. The residents who were initially evacuated were able to move back to their rooms after the operation.
