Within a few days there were several terrifying discoveries in Vienna. Cats were callously left to fend for themselves in a box and a bag – one heavily pregnant, the other seriously ill. “This is the sad reality of the way animals are often treated,” says Thomas Benda, operations manager at TierQuarTier.
It is a phenomenon that unfortunately happens again and again. Animals are abandoned on the streets by their owners and left helpless to fend for themselves. Not infrequently because they have become ill. Out of fear of high veterinary costs, owners often get rid of them, even if it means their death.
Chronology of horror
The six-year-old cat “Elfie” (she was called Vienna on TierQuarTier) was found a few days ago at Vienna’s main station in a box wrapped in a garbage bag, tape and cardboard. Her health was alarming: a serious oral infection, probably caused by a virus, caused her unimaginable pain. Without veterinary care, the animal would have died of starvation.
“Elfie” could only receive medication by syringe because oral administration was not possible due to the inflammation. In addition, her coat was heavily soiled and dandruff – signs of neglect.
Less than 24 hours later, another tragic discovery occurred in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt: a one-year-old brown-striped long-haired cat was found in an open bag of food on a bridge. During the veterinary examination it was discovered that she was heavily pregnant and would soon have three kittens.
Thanks to the prompt care of the TierQuarTier Vienna veterinary team, the “expectant cat mother” was able to survive. Her caregivers have given her the name “Layla” and have already found an experienced foster family where she can give birth to her babies in peace.
Not a trivial violation
Abandoning animals is strictly prohibited in Austria and punishable by fines of up to 7,500 euros. This punishment also threatens those who simply left ‘Elfie’ and ‘Layla’ to fend for themselves.
“Elfie” and “Layla” are now recovering in loving care and hoping for responsible people to give them a home once they are fit enough to move.
TierQuarTier Vienna depends on support for the care and maintenance of countless animals. With a donation you give thousands of animals in need, such as “Elfi” and “Layla”, the chance to survive.
