Depression, anxiety – every second person under 30 doesn’t feel healthy

Date:

When it comes to their mental health, Generation Z faces a greater challenge than any other youth generation: only one in two people (53 percent) are (very) satisfied with their own mental health. In this age generation, sleep disorders, headaches, depression and anxiety about the future are most pronounced in Austria.

For the Austrian health report, the health status, competence, precautions, etc. of the Austrian population were examined.

This shows that satisfaction with mental health increases linearly with age. While a slight majority (53 percent) of GenZ (16 to 29 year olds, i.e. those born in 1995 and 2010, note) are (very) satisfied with their mental health, 63 percent of 30 to 44 year olds, 60 percent of 45 to 59 year olds and even 80 percent of those over 60 are (very) satisfied with it.

Often depression, sleep disorders, headache
35 percent of GenZ have (very) often suffered from depression and anxiety in the past year (over-60s: eight percent), 37 percent of GenZ have (very) often suffered from headaches (over-60s: nine percent), 35 percent ( very) often suffer from sleep disorders (over-60s: 25 percent) and 36 percent of young people (very) often suffer from fears about the future (over-60s: eleven percent).

Removing taboos about mental disorders
What is new is that Generation Z deals with the subject of mental health much more openly than previous generations and thus contributes to removing the taboo surrounding mental disorders.

“In addition to an accessible support offering that also includes social media, we must mainly think about prevention. It would be desirable if children learned at school what they can do for their mental health!” emphasizes psychologist Birgit Hladschik-Kermer.
