Aggressive mood – German farmers prevent Green Party’s Ash Wednesday

Date:

The German Greens have canceled their Ash Wednesday political event in Biberach, Baden-Württemberg. The reason for this is the aggressive mood during demonstrations in the area. In the run-up to the event, there were massive protests and blockades, including by farmers.

According to its own information, the state farmers’ association in Baden-Württemberg did not call for the protests in advance or support them. Farmers in Biberach have been protesting and blocking roads since Wednesday morning. Dozens of tractors were parked on the access roads to the town hall. A large pile of manure was dumped in front of the hall. Loud horns and music could be heard.

The police use pepper spray
The protests also included an incident where police used pepper spray on demonstrators to clear the path for two vehicles.

Impressions from Biberach:

The two vehicles then drove away from the town hall. A vehicle window was smashed. Protesters had earlier blocked the street with paving stones and sandbags.

All paths blocked
The board of the district’s farmers’ association, Karl Endriß, said the location was difficult to reach because there were demonstrators in the area. According to Endriß, several groups had called for the protests. The demonstrators are mainly farmers, but transport companies are also involved.

The moment of cancellation is greeted festively:

The Greens have been meeting in Biberach for years, where many federal celebrities were expected again this year. In addition to Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir, who is considered a promising candidate to succeed Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann, Federal President Ricarda Lang and veteran Jürgen Trittin should take the lectern. Kretschmann should be there too.

Farmers in various European countries have been taking to the streets for weeks. They also protest against what they see as unfair competition with products from abroad. However, the demonstrations are repeatedly hijacked by right-wing groups.
