On Albanian territory, the Italian Senate has taken a decision on migrant centers

Date:

The Italian Senate ratified a migration treaty with Albania on Thursday. Accordingly, two centers will be built on Albanian soil for migrants setting their first foot on EU territory in Italy.

The facilities will each accommodate up to 3,000 people at the same time. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said only migrants rescued from the Mediterranean by Italian authorities would be taken to the centers. This means that people rescued by NGO rescue ships or who otherwise entered Italian territory are excluded from onward transport.

The two camps in Albania would fall under Italian jurisdiction and be managed by Italian personnel. In one, people are checked upon arrival, in the other they remain alive while their asylum application is being processed (see video above).

Albania’s approval is still lacking
The parliament in Albania has not yet approved it. However, Prime Minister Edi Rama’s Socialist Party, whose government signed the agreement, has the majority. The Constitutional Court in Tirana had already given the green light at the end of January.
