Since Italian-Tunisian rapper Ghali called for an end to the ‘genocide in Palestine’ at the Italian music festival in Sanremo, pro-Palestinian rallies have taken place in front of the headquarters of the Italian public TV channel RAI. RAI boss Roberto Sergio, whose station co-organized the music festival, immediately distanced himself from the musician and emphasized his “solidarity with the Israeli people.” Now RAI is facing accusations of censoring reporting on the war in the Middle East.
There were riots in front of the RAI headquarters in Bologna on Thursday. The protesters called for the resignation of Sergio, who is now under police protection after receiving death threats, over the allegations of censorship.
The front line of about a thousand demonstrators approached the stationed police officers, who responded with batons, according to Italian media reports. Objects and fireworks were then thrown at the security officers. The demonstrators had asked to be read on television a document entitled “Communique against the continued denial of genocide, censorship and pro-Israel reporting by the RAI.”
Five police officers and five protesters were injured in riots outside the RAI headquarters in Naples on Tuesday. The riots broke out at a similar demonstration by left-wing activists.
