A heavy forest fire registered various popular holiday resorts on the Croatian Adriatic coast on Saturday and led to large -scale evacuations. The area around the settlements of Pisak and Marušići, about 30 kilometers south of the city of Split, is particularly affected. Different Croatian media report.
The flames quickly spread through extreme drought, strong heat and violent winds – especially in the dense, easily flammable pine forests in the region.
According to media reports, the fire brigade is “completely overwhelmed” that the fire is currently “out of hand”. In addition to dozens of emergency services, firefighters are also used.
Popular holiday destination fully evacuated
Marušići, a place with around 200 inhabitants and countless holidaymakers, was completely evacuated. Many people were brought to safety with boats by the water police. Evacuations also run from other parts of the affected area.
Various houses and cars were destroyed by the flames. So far, however, there are no official reports about injuries.
Ask authorities for caution
Part of the important coastal road between the cities Omiš and Dubci had to be temporarily blocked in order not to hinder the emergency services and to remove tourists from the danger zone.
So far, nothing is known about the exact cause of the fire. The authorities ask for caution and ask travelers to strictly follow the official instructions.
