Hostages on location? – Israeli troops have entered the hospital

Date:

Israeli forces raided a hospital in the southern Gaza Strip on Thursday. “We have credible information that Hamas is holding hostages at Nasser Hospital,” the army said. Terrorists apparently also operated from the facility.

The Israeli army spokesman spoke of a “precise and limited operation at Nasser Hospital” in Khan Younis. The goal is to recover the bodies of hostages. The operation had been prepared for a long time with special units. The hospital did not have to be evacuated. The Palestinian Health Authority reported shelling that killed one patient and injured others. The troops reportedly stormed the hospital and destroyed a wall.

Ceasefire negotiations in Cairo
The information could not initially be independently verified. There are currently 134 people in the hands of Hamas, of whom at least 30 are no longer alive, according to Israeli estimates. Negotiations in Cairo to release more hostages in exchange for a ceasefire in the Gaza war and the release of Palestinian prisoners have so far failed to lead to a breakthrough. On Monday evening, Israeli special forces released two hostages, aged 60 and 70, in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Mass Exodus to Egypt?
Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the army to submit plans for an offensive in Rafah. UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths now fears a mass exodus of civilians to Egypt. The idea that people in the south of the Gaza Strip can be taken to a safe place is an ‘illusion’.
