Shortly before the deadline for submitting the pre-scientific theses (VWA) for the AHS-Matura, there were technical problems uploading them. The portal was temporarily unavailable. The problems were resolved on Friday, but the Ministry of Education extended the deadline until Tuesday.
Graduates from high schools in Vienna, Lower Austria and Vorarlberg are affected. In the other states, the deadline ends later anyway due to the later semester break, and at secondary vocational schools (BHS) generally different deadlines apply for final theses.
Anyone who has already uploaded their work without success can now do so again, the Ministry of Education announced on Friday. The technical problems started on Thursday morning. A storage system in the data center failed.
Work also needs to be presented
The preliminary scientific work is a mandatory part of the final examination at general secondary schools (AHS). It contains a maximum of 60,000 characters and must be printed and submitted digitally by the end of the first week of school of the second semester. Sometimes the reason for uploading is that the plagiarism checker is running at work. What is written must later be presented and discussed before a committee.
Not a new problem
The VWA was introduced in 2015. Shortly afterwards, the system failed due to overload in the last week of delivery. In response, server capacities were expanded and a kind of ’emergency variant’ was introduced. To meet the deadline, work can now be submitted to the school via USB stick and uploaded later. The students choose the topic themselves in consultation with the teachers.
