Tensions in Rome – 2 ships carrying 436 refugees reach Sicily

Date:

Two NGO ships with a total of 436 migrants on board are allowed to dock in Sicily. There are 344 people on the German rescue ship “Sea Watch 3”, including 118 minors. Most migrants come from Tunisia, Pakistan, Syria and Sudan. The new wave of refugees is causing tensions in Rome.

Both ships were assigned the port of Pozzallo by the Italian authorities at the request of both humanitarian organizations.

Another 92 people rescued by the Italian rescue vessel Mare Jonio last weekend will also disembark in Pozzallo on Thursday.

More than 20,000 migrants have arrived in Italy after sea voyages across the Mediterranean since early 2022, according to the Interior Ministry in Rome. In the same period of 2021 there were 14,962.
