On Thursday afternoon, the boiler room of a house in Puch near Weiz (Styria) caught fire. A 78-year-old and his grandson’s 28-year-old wife were able to escape outside, but the smoke fumes were fatal. Ultimately, 34 firefighters managed to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire is still unclear.
There are delicate scenes that took place on Thursday around 4 p.m. in that residential building near Weiz: the 78-year-old resident was sleeping when flames broke out in the boiler room. Fortunately, his grandson’s wife (28) noticed the fire and immediately rushed to his room to wake him up.
Neighbors tried to extinguish the fire themselves
While the young woman alerted the emergency services, the 78-year-old tried to extinguish the fire together with neighbors – but in vain. A little later, the volunteer fire brigades Puch bei Weiz and Floing arrived on the scene – they were able to extinguish the fire with 34 men.
It is still unclear what caused the chimney fire. The 78-year-old was taken to hospital for suspected smoke inhalation.
