After newly elected American President Donald Trump, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has now also proposed a ceasefire for the war in Ukraine. A peace treaty must then be negotiated, Orbán said. Local President Volodymyr Zelensky considers this “very dangerous”.
“With a ceasefire we risk a frozen conflict. We can’t say that we will see what happens later. This is dangerous and irresponsible,” Zelenskyj said in Budapest on Thursday. He was referring to fighting with pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine since 2014.
Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán had previously said that the most important thing was to end the deaths in Ukraine through a ceasefire. Peace negotiations are only the second step. “If you talk too much about a peace solution, you reduce the chance of a ceasefire.”
The Hungarian Prime Minister largely supports the EU sanctions against Russia, but continues to maintain good economic and political relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Peace through strength”
Newly elected US President Donald Trump even said he could end the war within 24 hours. His team recently revealed details to the US media, including Ukraine’s pledge not to join the NATO military alliance for 20 years. Zelensky said he was not aware of any details. If the Trump White House stops supporting it, frozen Russian assets in Europe could be used.
In any case, Europe urgently needs to pursue a policy of “peace through strength”. Concessions to Putin are unacceptable for Ukraine and self-destructive for Europe. It is up to his country to determine what will and will not be done to end the war.
