The liberal academic ball will take place again on Friday in the Vienna Hofburg. The event – described by critics as an international networking meeting for right-wing extremists – was again accompanied by demonstrations. Five rallies were registered.
The police had 900 officers on duty and there was a lockdown around the Hofburg from 5 p.m. So far everything has gone smoothly.
Last rally planned at Stephansplatz
The participants of the ‘No Place for Faschos’ protest march are currently gathering in front of the main building of the University of Vienna. The demonstration route runs from Schottenring via Wipplingerstrasse, Hoher Markt, Rotenturmstrasse to Stephansplatz. A final rally is planned there.

FPÖ celebrities are missing
Although many high-ranking guests from the PVV are expected again this year, party leader Herbert Kickl will not be present as usual. EU leadership candidate Harald Vilimsky is also staying away from the Hofburg despite the ‘super election year’ 2024. It is expected that third chairman of the National Council and former FPÖ leader Norbert Hofer, who is a regular guest at the ball, will attend.
