The case of suspected animal abuse in the Bregenz region is also making international headlines. The investigation is not yet completed and there is currently a vicious suspicion hanging in the air.
It is a scandalous case of animal abuse. A farmer and a second farmer allegedly ripped out a cow’s tongue in August last year. Photos of the torn tongue circulated; apparently the farmer showed the material around in a social setting with a certain pride. One of the viewers did the right thing and reported the man to the Animal Protection Ombudsman.
Bad suspicion
While the possibility of an accident was still up in the air, a serious suspicion is now spreading: according to an anonymous letter sent to several animal protection organizations and some media, the incident was not an isolated incident.
On the contrary: there are said to be several young farmers in the Bregenz region who ridicule this type of torture and record the scenes as photos or videos. We can only hope that this suspicion is not further confirmed. The case is bad enough, even the “Frankfurter Rundschau” has reported on the brutal animal torture and is not the only one in Germany.
Milk production: what counts
In any case, it is surprising that the case only became public now, almost six months after the actual crime. During the course of the investigation, it also became known to the public that the farmer in question was illegally trading in animal medicines, in particular hormones that are supposed to increase the milk production of cows. There are already first consequences in this matter.
The Veterinary Chamber has responded
The Veterinary Association of Vorarlberg announced on Friday that it would reconsider the framework agreement for veterinary care in the state – concluded with the Chamber of Agriculture. However, the veterinarians first want to wait for the final results of the examination.
