A woman in Britain has been jailed for taking a little girl to Kenya for genital mutilation. The Old Bailey criminal court in London sentenced the 40-year-old to seven years in prison on Friday.
The woman traveled to Kenya in 2006 with the then three-year-old girl. There she took the toddler to a private home, where the child subsequently became a victim of female circumcision, also known as ‘female genital mutilation (FGM)’.
Girl confided in teacher
The crime was only noticed years later, when the girl confided in a teacher at school at the age of 16. During the procedure, the girl’s entire clitoris was cut away.
According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 200 million girls and women worldwide have had their genitals circumcised. The procedure is banned in many countries, but is still sometimes practiced.
This is the first conviction in such a case. A London police official said he hoped the ruling would be a real deterrent. He hopes that more attention will be paid to the problem and that victims know that they can receive support and help.
